Where did you get your medical degrees? Because EJ has been shot in the head and has been recovering from surgery for only 2-3 days. FYI – this means his brain has not even recovered from the damage caused by bullets and scalpels, much less the swelling caused by said events. I think you need to give him a few days, or even a few weeks here.

Letter to Vivian

Oh, poor Vivian. You are such a pale shadow of your former wicked self. When you buried Carly alive it was compelling television, I had to watch. If/when you manage to bury Maggie in that gaudy sarcophagus it will be not-so-compelling. I find myself hoping that the spoilers I’ve read are true and you are caught before you actually manage to pull this one off. Not because I love Maggie so much (I do!) and don’t want her buried alive, but because it will be boring, a cartoonish attempt to recreate your glory days of being one of the bad, bad women of Salem. It just is not working. I did like the visual image of Maggie’s red hair clashing with the pink satin of the pillowcase, but that’s not enough to make me want to watch.

And really your current goon/partner in crime cannot hold a candle to the delightful Ivan. Ivan was wonderful (intelligent, snarky), this guy is more like a cocker spaniel – he’s cute but ineffective. But, hey! He did finally manage to notice that you might actually go through with your heinous plot and gathered together enough gumption for a minor protest today.

On another topic, what’s with the sudden, overwhelming devotion to Victor? Are we supposed to believe that you have been carrying a torch for him all these years? Or that you suddenly became enamored of him after your (current) return to Salem? I would guess the latter, but I’m afraid you ramble on so much that I can’t really tell what you are thinking. First you were totally intent upon avenging Lawrence’s death (because he was such a prize?), then getting Philip to call you mommy, then getting Melanie to love you, then on killing her, then getting Victor to marry you, then getting Victor to love you and now you have a bee in your bonnet about Maggie! As William Shatner supposedly said, you need to “get a life”.

For a woman who had power, personality, charm and imagination you seem to have lost it. The only thing you have left is money to buy tasteless burial accessories and really wacky ideas that just are not fun.

But at least your hair looks a little better than it did when you first got back to Salem. It’s still not great, but it’s passable.

The problem with EJ

EJ is an interesting character played by a great actor. However, his character is problematic. Obviously he is bad, but he seems to have little flashes of a (slightly) evolving conscience.

If he’s going to be a bad guy then he probably can never be part of a hot Super Couple in the Days tradition. No True Love for bad guys. This is kind of a waste of a gorgeous man with great Super Couple potential. On the other hand, Days of Our Lives seems to be moving away from trying to recreate their 1980s Super Couple glory days.

Then there is his history from the crazy times. Raping, beating, torturing (and enjoying it immensely) seem to best forgotten as a bad dream caused by insane writers. After all, he’s been plenty bad enough since we got reasonable writers with some reasonable direction.

If he’s going to be “redeemed”, then he really cannot run around Salem choking people or kidnapping babies and preschoolers. I thought he might be going the redemption route lately because he seemed to actually be growing a heart or soul, but no – he’s still a self-centered, selfish, “the world revolves around me” kind of guy. Which makes for good soap, but not for good romance.

Dead Inside

So much for the EJ redemption. Clearly Sami had a close call with this wedding, but I’m sure she will several more chances to be endangered by him . Hopefully the contingent ‘shipping on the two of them together will not get their wish any time soon.

EJ: Nicole “spoiled all my dreams”

I still like Nicole with EJ, and think they are a very good couple for soapy drama. EJ really doesn’t work with anyone as long as he is a psychotic, self-entitled, self-centered, raging maniac. Does he have Borderline Personality Disorder? Or Antisocial Personality Disorder? Obviously, there is some sort of disorder going on here. Nicole seems to have hit the nail on the head here, even trying to get him to see that he is “dead inside”. If anyone can see that EJ is an empty shell, it should be Nicole. They both are lacking in the conscience department. Maybe they could help each other grow one, or even two.

Is “Lets go be alone” a new euphemism (like Bope’s “Let’s celebrate”)? Apparently it is, because Sami and Rafe definitely are euphemism-ing all over the bed.

Come over for drinkees, ASAP

James Scott knocked it out of the ballpark. Alison Sweeney was extremely good too. If EJami fans want the two of them together this is the only way it can happen. EJ has to suffer, he has to figure out that what he’s done, not just in the last year, but since he arrived in Salem, is not equivalent to Sami’s “bad behavior”. The ridiculous “I’ve done bad things and you’ve done bad things, so we’re equal” is not going to work. EJ needs to finish his character development (actually understand what he has done and admit it – all), or he and Sami cannot be a couple. I don’t really object to EJami, I object to EJ getting away with “pure evil” as Caroline called him. He has to pay, just like Sami had to pay for pretending Austin was Will’s father and all the other conninving, manipulative, sneaky things she did (most of which she did while still a teenager). She has learned her lessons and grown up, it’s time for EJ to try it.

I am not looking forward to Vivian burying someone else alive. It was interesting once (although a really dragged storyline), but I don’t think I can take weeks of Maggie being in a box, even if it is beautiful marble with pretty pink satin lining. Speaking of Vivian, anyone want to “come over for drinkees, ASAP”?

I am really enjoying Days lately, it’s like a real soap opera now.

Chloe! Your head is gigantic! I mean really, really large. Big chin, big cheeks, big hair. One would think with all that head space you would be able to do a better job of critical thinking. Maybe you truly are an airhead?

“Bo’s teeny, tiny wife knocked you down and branded you, that’s gotta sting in a lotta ways!” Yeah, Brady. It’s gotta sting a little.

Sami, what the heck is that outfit? I mean, besides the obviousness of easy access for that make-out session with Rafe in a locker room. Other than that, it is just plain bad. I think it’s the gray thing that really makes it wrong, it doesn’t seem to go with the rest of the outfit.

Oh, Steph! What happened to the girl who raced cars, had morals, a backbone? She’s hiding in closets conniving to keep Nathan (why? I just don’t get the appeal of that guy), planning to tamper with DNA tests. How could Steve and Kayla’s daughter end up like this?

Does anyone really think Sami needs help planning a wedding? Hasn’t she been to the altar several times already? I know most of her weddings didn’t actually pan out, but she did plan many of them. However, the prospect of Kate helping her plan it sounds like fun.

Kate can sing “Oh Promise Me” at EJami’s wedding, that I would actually like to see, it would almost make an EJami wedding tolerable. Especially since I don’t see it lasting long if it even happens.

EJ bugged Sami about his proposal, she said yes! OMG! NOoooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo!

And at the very moment Sami said yes, Rafe felt a great disturbance in the force, as if thousands of voices suddenly cried out in pain (two of them were right here in my house). Anyway, Rafe seemed to have felt something and it wasn’t good. The KoE seemed to think Rafe had been subliminally kicked in the privates (those weren’t the words the KoE used but you can fill in the blanks yourself).

Sami, I do not know what you are thinking here. In fact, I’m pretty sure you are not thinking at all. As in, your brain is completely empty, you need someone with a brain to tell you what to do. I don’t know who that someone might be because you live in Salem. I’m pretty sure there are only a few brains available in town and they have to share them. But you might want to listen to your Dad or your Grandma, they seem to have some cognitive ability despite the fact that they live in Salem.

Soapy goodness

August is sweeps month, isn’t it? And it shows. Storylines that have dragged on interminably are finally starting to pay off, even Chloe was compelling. As in, we had to watch. Is she going to be discovered by Daniel? Is Daniel going to get a clue? And the answer is no and no, at least so far.

I despaired of any of this ever making any sense, and suddenly (at least some) it is. Months of Good Hope versus Red Lipstick Hope. Bo’s in love with Hope, Bo’s in love with Carly. Brady is in love with Arianna, Brady is in love with Nicole. Chloe is having Philip’s baby, Chloe is having Daniel’s baby. Carly is going to tell Daniel about Chloe’s revenge sex, Carly is going to help Chloe hide her infidelity. EJ is going to end up with Sami, Ej is going to end up killed by Sami. Sami is going to marry EJ, Sami is going back to Rafe. Daniel’s going to find out that Chloe slept with Philip, Chloe’s going to get away with her infidelity. Sami loves Rafe, Sami loves EJ. Kate knows the secret about Chad and will tell Stefano, Kate won’t tell Stefano. Melanie is not going to find out about Philip and Chloe’s illicit rendevous, Melanie is going to find out about Philip sleeping with Chloe.

KoE: And Joe Isuzu (Chad’s dad) is a constant jerk, he’s one of the few constants in the show.

And now that’s it’s August everything is actually getting interesting. They’ve spent months setting this stuff up and finally (finally!) somethings are starting to happen.

For some reason, I always loved Alice Horton. She gave good advice. In fact, when I had an apparently insane teenager her advice to ignore anything that can be cut, washed off or put back on enabled me to survive my crazy teenager’s hair and clothing.

Having a kind, loving older generation to give advice, approval or acceptance is one of the things that has been missing on Days of Our Lives over the last few years. The older generation has been too busy trying to recreate their youth even though they were grandparents (remember Marlena in her Gaspalena phase?). Instead of being the older, wiser generation, older characters have been trying to pretend they were still in their twenties and thirties.

TPTB have tried to tell us that young people don’t like watching older people, but I don’t believe that. I first saw Mrs. Horton when I was sixteen years old, I thought she was wonderful. I’ve had many others tell me the same thing.

They need to have an older generation, unfortunately who do they have left? Kate, Stefano, Victor? Clearly they aren’t model citizens and you would be better off taking advice from Will or Ciara or maybe even Theo. Caroline could give good advice but for some reason they don’t seem to remember she exists. That seems to leave Maggie, maybe she could be the next Mrs. H. Let’s hope they don’t mess it up.

Crazy women of Salem – part 2

While I still think Hope is crazy (because running around hitting men over the head, stealing their wallets as trophies and burning strange Celtic symbols into their flesh is crazy), she at least has the excuse of being under the influence of a drug like Ambien which does cause a small percentage of people to have no memory of walking, talking or even driving while using it. However, there are some other women in Salem who have no such excuse.

First we have Chloe. Since she returned to Salem she has done several rather dumb things, but at least they were in the realm of normal soap opera dumb. Marrying Lucas because she “made a promise to God” while in love with Daniel being a prime example of normal soapy idiocy. But deciding that it’s Carly’s fault she had sex with Philip is reaching a deranged level, deciding to stop Carly from telling about her unfaithfulness by killing her using a hitman is clearly crazy territory. I mean DSM IV certifiable mental illness.

Second we have Vivian. She has always been nuts. But it was fun to watch her insanity. Burying Carly alive was definitely crazy but we could at least follow her insane reasoning even if we didn’t agree with it. Now she’s just illogical (even for a crazy person) and not so fun to watch as she connives her way through her life. I do enjoy Victor’s responses to her though. Too bad he doesn’t keep a closer eye on her.

Nicole has always been a scheming, manipulative wacko, but she always had some convoluted logic as to why her scheming made sense. And she still does for the most part, but she also is slipping toward full-blown insanity with her idea that Brady is once again a viable romantic target.

The main problem is we have many women in Salem and almost all of them are irrational to some degree. Kate seems to be one of the more rational, reasonable women in town and if she is the “normal” one things are getting scary.
